Session Start: Sat Jun 09 17:23:33 2007 Session Ident: #castlevania * Logging for #castlevania started [The party stumbles back into Kronnenburg, exhausted but satisfied with their combat prowess.] Well, that was satisfying. Except for the whole getting shot part. I'm going to get a good night's sleep. * Nyyx nods. "I think I will too. Good night." * Biff hops up on Nyyx's shoulder. Right. Let's go! [The party crashes into the Inn and settles in for the evening.] [Night passes.] [Morning comes and the party comes downstairs for breakfast.] * Nyyx rises early and is in the common room having her usual breakfast of bread and stew. [Unusually, Alexander du Pre and his boy servant are downstairs with their luggage.] * Nyyx glances surreptitiously over at du Pre and his servant without turning her head. * Biff comes down for his usual breakfast of milk and meat. Preferably cooked, but raw will do. * Biff heads out after breakfast for exercise, practice, and general fun. * Nyyx finishes her meal and heads out to see if Mayor Kleppen needs any help with his alchemical work today. * Theodore and Biff examine the zombie corpses carefully. [Biff, Skip and Theodore begin their examinations of the felled monsters in a spare room of the church.] [Nyyx spends the morning tending to Kleppen's backyard garden with the mayor.] [Siobhan relates the previous day's adventure to the High Priestess.] Biff casts Detect Magic [The corpses glow with residual magic in their body cores and eyes, but no active effects. They have been thoroughly disabled.] Great. * Biff sets about "disabling" this device, for values of "disabling" equal to "removing intact" * Theodore examines the exterior of a zombie for anything unusual compared to other zombies he has seen [The zombie has glass and metal lenses where its eyes should be and metal veins occasionally blossom on the creature's skin.] * Theodore says to Biff: "What do you think? Open up the chest to see what it has for organs first or remove the eyes?" The eyes, I think. I want to do the delicate stuff while I'm still awake. Alright. Any idea how to get them out without breaking them? Easy. You hold them steady, I'll dissolve the flesh around them. with what? * Biff reaches across and plucks the "arm" of his armor with a claw. It'll take time, but it works. And the time just means I've got more leeway to pull back when I get through. Wait, if I am going to hold him, I want to know what is going to dissolve its flesh." My armor. It's acidic. Well, on the outside. ah. Here we go then * Biff presses his upper leg against the zombie's arm by way of example, and the armor slowly eats its way into the flesh. * Theodore holds the head steady and tries not to get hit by the armor * Biff reaches carefully down and starts dissolving the flesh and bone away from the eye. [After a few tense minutes, the "eye" rattles loose in the pit created by the acid.] See? No problem. very effective. now, what is it? No idea. You tell me, you're the wizard. I'm a B&E expert. yes yes. let's see. * Theodore examines the eye closely [The "eye" is a glass lens ring in metal with a silver backing that previously linked into the creature's brain.] Alright, time to crack her open. Now, how are we going to do this... maybe we should call for muscle. [Skip volunteers.] Heh. Go for it. [Skip saws through the creature's ribcage just to the left of the sternum and then spreads the cage open displaying the desicated chest cavity.] We need the sternum cut. then, the ribcage cracked to expose the internal organs. [The metal veins lead from the neck of the creature and spider randomly through the body cavity without rhyme or reason.] Makes no sense to me, pal. We need to open the cranium now. maybe the top of the skull would be best... we could make a small crack and increase the opening * Biff starts slowly drawing a circle around the top of the skull with his armor. [After long minutes, a plug of bone is freed from the skull.] Aaaah, what a little finesse will do. * Theodore casts light to see into the opening [The grey matter is mostly rotten and withered. The metal veins wrap around what is left.] Do you think we can pull the brain out intact> I doubt it. unless you have a Mending handy. we need to crack the skull in 2 Whoa, physical damage? I got nothin' doc. I could enlarge the subject... [Skip goes and fetches Sio and her massive hammer.] [With a mighty strike, Siobhan cracks the zombie's skull.] [Skip pries the halves apart with his dagger. "We did this to clams in my village."] Clams are good eats. I don't encourage eating zombie brains. [The brain is a shriveled, dusty mess wrapped in metal veins. The veins lead into the one remaining eye socked and down into the body cavity.] [While the quartet ponders this, a white glow shoots down the hallway.] What was that? Dunno. I'll check. * Biff hops off the table and darts out into the hall. [Biff enters the main chamber and sees the High Priestess standing at the altar. Her eyes are glowing white hot and she is standing rigid.] Uh... Theo? You better get out here. In fact, everybody better get out here! That is unusual... That looks like positive energy coming from her eyes... I don't understand Positive energy is good energy. So, like, she's probably gonna give a prophecy or something. Have you ever seen a priestess' eyes glow white on the altar of a Church? Nope. Also, that light will evaporate our dissections well, at least it'll leave the precious metal. [After several minutes, the light fades and the High Priestess turns around.] [The Priestess looks tired and is staring around the room aimlessly.] Uh, hello? "Priestess? Are you alright?" Are you back in the land of the living? "What? Who is there?" Behind you. It's your friendly local adventuring company. And its talking cat. "Ah. Good. The Inquisition is coming. They will be here tomorrow. And I'm temporarily blind. Communing with the Contact is very trying." Inquisition? And let me help you to find a seat. "The Pelorian Division anyway. This vampire business will be over very soon. We are finally getting help." "Thank you." [She sits in a nearby chair with Theodore's help.] "What exactly are they sending?" "A platoon of priests, warriors, and mercenaries to clean out the castle and secure your presence in the West." "I see. Are they bringing supplies?" "I don't know. They are gating in from a nearby town, so I would assume yes." "I see. Why are they just arriving now? "I don't know. They are securing the town and castle and then will interview the inhabitants. I was told to secure everyone. That is all." "This all seems too convenient. This infestation has been here for years and years and now suddenly the Inquisition is showing up to solve it." I smell a trap. I do too. Yet the spell seems quite legitimate what town are they coming from? "Richtenburg, a week to the West." do you know anyone in the group? "I don't know. The sending came from further West. From the Contact itself." What do they mean by "secure everyone"? "Keep them here to meet them. There will be a full inquiry." Inquiry? They're the inquisition. That's what they do. Yes. But what is involved? "Interviews, I would imagine." As a man who keeps an extra large Kobold in his barn, I am surprisingly not reassured by that response. I can't imagine they're exactly fond of talking cats, either. Want me to take the kobold and scram? you can't leave. the vampires will kill everyone "That and I will tell them about Biff and Liverwurst. They'll just go looking for you." Please. You think I can't avoid some soldiers in gigantic forest? You might be able to Biff, but the vampires will kill the townspeople. I'm not going to -leave- And since when has this Church not appreciated this party's contributions to saving the town? I'm talking about the forest around the castle. if they were going to kill all the people, they'd have done it while I was scouting. "In all fairness, if the vampires come down while the Church's forces are here, they will be annihilated." "These people are born to fight the undead and vampires have striking weaknesses." Priestess, you have known about the Kobold for a long time. And you have allowed us to use the Church. And until the death of Father Lucas, we had a member of the clergy in our party. So I assume you will support us when the Inquisitors arrive." "Of course, but I will tell them everything. You have defended this town for months with little reward and are noble, honest folk if a bit unorthodox." Good. I am glad we are on the same page. We should finish our dissections before the Inquisitors come and burn the subjects. Fine. If they kill me, I'm coming back just to kill you. Skip, please tell the others. Sio, Biff and I will finish the dissections. [Skip prances away.] * Biff heads back to do more alien autopsies. [All of the zombie autopsies work the same way, with metal in the brain and altered eyes. Everything can be extracted with patience.] [The party carries the spider corpse into the barn.] [The party goes off to work on it's own affairs quietly.] [In the late afternoon, Alexander du Pre and his manservant leave Kronnenburg by carriage silently.] * Nyyx follows Theodore outside town to accost du Pre. "Alexander, are you leaving?" "Yes. We are done here and heading West." "I see. So how long have you been back in town?" "We have been here constantly for the last several weeks." "I thought so. And what was the last of your business you just completed? "Business? We were simply waiting here while the Gregor matter resolved itself, but that seems to be nearing its end." "Quite. But you don't want to stay to make sure it is all resolved?" "No." * Nyyx frowns. "And, before you leave - can you tell us more about the cursed golem armlet and why you gave it to our late companion Gabriel?" We met some mechanical creatures in the castle, and they may be linked to the golem. "I would think your employer would like verification the situation is stable, would he not?" "We have been over this. It was a gift for the lord of this castle, but as the castle was taken over by vampires, I gave it to the first adventurer I saw who was fighting the vampires. I learned that it was cursed only after Gabriel fell ill." "I suspect that what verification I can provide will be enough." Oh come now, surely another day can't hurt. We have hardly had any time to spend together with us in the castle, and here you are leaving the one night we have time. "And? I have been here for months. Where did this sudden urge to socialize come from? What would you talk about?" We have been spending every night in the castle! I simply appreciate the company of educated gentlemen to pass an evening in conversation. Is that so unusual for an old scholar? "No, not terribly, but I will not be delayed by recreation. Perhaps Mayor Kleppen would provide conversation." Well not just recreation. Also verification for your employer. "Look, I have a feeling that we will be seeing each other again, but right now, we are leaving. Just make sure that the Church collects that Stone you brought back. Goodnight." [The carriage pulls away.] [Time passes.] * Theodore returns to the inn [The night and following morning pass uneventfully.] [The party assembles in the common room of the Inn before lunch.] [The air begins to cackle with electricity as noon approaches.] * Biff says a short prayer. [Precisely at noon, the front windows to the Inn light up with a bright, white glow.] [The Wards on the doors glow blue under the pressure.] [Voices and movement can be heard outside. The glow fades.] Ooooh boy. * Nyyx grimaces and stays where she's sitting. [Oberon and Charlotte arrive through the gate with the Inquisition at the center of glowing conflagration.] * Oberon stands at ease among the other mercenaries. I have a feeling they're not going to like me, no matter what I say. If it comes down to it, just follow me. * Nyyx nods. * Charlotte looks over the group. She's a small, thin-looking woman dressed in dark colors. * Biff is a tiny black/brown tiger striped cat, wearing some improbable-looking clothing, a literal puss-in-boots. [The door to the Inn opens.] * Oberon is a short, pleasantly rotund man with salt and pepper hair and blue eyes. He's wearing pale blue robes. * Nyyx is sitting in a corner with the other party members. She is a gaunt, pale woman in what looks like a silver-trimmed black gown, wine-colored trousers, boots, and a long black cloak. She holds a feathered hat in her hands and looks up calmly with colorlessly gray eyes. [A man in shinning plate armor steps into the Inn and scans the room. He focuses on Nyyx.] "What is your name young lady?" Natalia Ruthven. * Nyyx stands slowly. "Pleased to meet you. Were you one of Lucas's confederates?" * Nyyx nods and remains polite, but does not quite smile. "A pleasure. Yes, I was." "All of you need to come outside. Bring everyone in the building." [He turns and steps outside.] * Nyyx takes a deep breath. "I guess we're going outside." [The guards and priests begin to collect everyone in the town. A small team enters the church.] * Biff hops up on Nyyx's shoulder, tail high with anxiety. * Nyyx takes another deep breath and goes outside with Biff. * Theodore follows [Outside, the party observes most of the town gathering along with thirty priest, clerics, and mercenaries.] [The High Priestess, Siobhan, and a team of clerics step out of the church and head toward the commander.] [Most of the clerics wear the classic grey robes of a traveling cleric of Pelor. The fighters of the group wear plate mail. The mercenaries are a random bunch.] * Nyyx slips the hat back on and glances around at the group that came in with the Inquisition. [A familiar face appears among the mercenaries. Jacob from the previous adventuring group in the castle is milling about the town square. His left arm has been replaced with shinning bronze plate mail.] * Nyyx makes eye contact with Jacob and acknowledges him with a nod and a slight tip of the hat. [Slowly, the entire village converges in the town square.] Commander: "Is everyone assembled?" * Oberon glances left and right and briefly behind him. "It would appear so, sir!" Commander: "Alright. We are the Pelorian Inquisition. This town is under our control until further notice. No one is to leave without our express permission. We will cleanse the castle and interview everyone in Kronnenburg." "This should only take a few days. Hopefully, your village will be back to normal within the week." * Oberon fails utterly to look intimidating and competent, but is gamely trying. "First, everyone please return to your homes. Food and water will be brought to you. Do not leave your homes until the castle is cleansed." * Nyyx shudders slightly under her cloak and hat. "Next, you" [points at the party] "will retrieve the thing in the barn over there and meet with me in the church." "Sargent, take a squad and scout the castle. Move out!" * Oberon does his best to fade into the general crowd of mercenaries and avoid being sent to the castle. [People start to move into their homes and soldiers prepare to move out. Charlette, Oberon, the Commander and the High Priestess walk into the church.] * Charlotte naturally seems to jsut kinda blend in. * Charlotte moves to the Church as described. * Theodore whispers "we should go to the Church" * Nyyx nods. "He wants us to bring Liverwurst, though." * Theodore I suppose we should go get Liverwurst Or, at least I'm guessing that he meant Liverwurst. Um, isn't that where we stashed the spider golem? Well it's no good asking. he will tell us to bring both * Nyyx suddenly laughs. "Yes, I think so." * Biff shrugs. "Bring both, then." which do you think he meant? Hard to say, but I suppose we could bring both. * Nyyx heads for the barn. I suggest only one. I bet he meant Liverwurst * Nyyx nods. "All right." if we guess wrong, we will have to grab the other just grab them both, already! I suppose we could * Nyyx knocks on the door to the barn. "Liverwurst? Are you in there?" "Yep!" * Nyyx opens the door. "It looks like we'll be going to be going to the church for some questioning, and they've asked us to bring you with us." "Okay!" [Liverwurst was playing with the spider corpse.] * Nyyx cocks her head at the kobold. "Fun toy?" "Yes. Are we ready to go?" I think so I think so. Why don't you bring the spider with you. They might want to take a look at it. "Alright." [The kobold drags the spider corpse out of the barn and towards the church.] [After some minutes, the party, Liverwurst, the Commander, Oberon, Charlotte, and the High Priestess assemble at the church.] Commander: "Alright, first, what happened to Father Lucas?" He was killed. He died protecting this party. I gave the eulogy at his funeral. * Nyyx nods. * Oberon nods as if he's following along with the conversation. Commander: "How?" He was slain by an undead mage known as Graycloak. He was frozen and shattered. "Where is he interred?" He was buried out behind the church. He lies in the cemetary behind the Church. "Marian, take Oberon here and dig him up. He's coming with us." * Oberon looks shocked. "Me? Dig? What about my delicate hands?" No, he will not. He is in peace. "The reason that we are here, apart from the vampires, is that the Contact felt Lucas die. That is to be expected when a priest passes, but his soul is not with Pelor." Yes. That is not surprising. He was undead for a time. "We must know why." "Undead?" Yes We have been told by possibly unreliable sources that the afterlife no longer accepts the dead. "What? Who told you that?" * Nyyx gestures with a tilt of her chin toward the castle. "Gregor." "The vampire." * Nyyx nods her affirmation. "Who have you discussed this with?" The High Priestess, and the mayor. We have no idea if his claim is true. "Lucas's soul should have joined with Pelor upon his demise. Since his death, other priests have joined with our master. Lucas is the anomaly." "The question is why?" "I would guess it is because he was undead." * Nyyx frowns. "Undead?" "Yes. I think we went over this. He died in the demi-plane. The negative energy seems to have converted him into a demi-lich. He died in that state, cut off from Pelor." * Nyyx quickly adds, "But he was restored to the living when we left the plane." "Was he. What kind of 'plane' was this?" A demi-plane. And I misspoke. He was restored to the living before his death." Gregor said he was building an alternate afterlife with the demi-plane. It's collapsed into a stone that we've given to the High Priestess for safekeeping. "Alternate afterlife... that's possible. We will be taking this stone." * Nyyx nods. "Next, Natalia, why does your hand radiate evil?" While we were in the demi-plane, we were attacked by one of Gregor's minions that we'd previously slain and who ended up in Gregor's afterlife. He was attempting to breach the demi-plane in order to escape, and while fighting him, my hand was caught in the vacuum that his body became. When we left the plane, my hand was as you see it now. "I see. Oberon, Marian, why have you not left to exume Lucas yet?" "Respectfully, sir, I am not the best choice for this particular task. Because we do not exhume the dead without something more than your say so in this village. "You do now. What is your name, anyway, sir?" I am Theodore, wizard. "Oberon, my payment for your services makes you a more than adequate choice." "And you also entered this 'demiplane'?" I am also a friend of one of your guards, Jacob. "Undoubtedly, sir, I was just thinking about the expediency of your wishes. I was merely mentioning that my skills were not best suited to completing the task swiftly Yes. I assessed it, determined what it was, documented it. "Reasonable, given that he is from this village as of late." "We have time enough, Oberon, continue." "Documented it, how?" In my notebook. I have notes about it I am a scholar, sir. "We will need those." You may copy them "Fair enough." "Continue, sir? But I haven't even begun yet." "GO!" "Where? I mean which grave, sir? Is it marked?" "Marian will show you." "Natalia, you have been contaminated by evil. Will you accept our aid willingly?" * Oberon bows awkwardly. "Very well, sir." [Marian leads Oberon outside.] * Nyyx hesitates. "What does your aid entail?" Commander, perhaps you could speak to our party in private for a moment. * Oberon follows slowly, looking very like a sullen child. "Removal of the contamination." You'll not remove my hand...? "I will speak to you right here. There will be no secrets between us, Theodore." "I have no idea how much of your hand is not contaminated, Natalia." * Theodore whipsers to Nyyx, "You have to tell them about your ancestry. Their help may kill you otherwise." * Nyyx flinches. With all due respect, I'm very attached to my hand, and the limb is necessary to my line of work, Commander. "Those parts tainted by evil are not yours anymore, Natalia." "Should you accept our aid, any injury will be healed." * Nyyx 's fingers of her right hand flex uncomfortably. "I'll recover my hand and its full usage?" "That is the expectation. If not, a prosthetic will be provided. Your battle against Gregor warrants that much at least." And if I choose not to take the risk? "You will be declared an enemy of the church." An enemy of the Church?! She has risked her life every day for this Church and for the parishioner here! * Nyyx grits her teeth in frustration under the shadow of her hat's wide brim. "Very well, if I have no other choice..." "And we require another day at least." "You always have a choice, but we must protect our followers and the community at large." * Biff lets off a deep, rumbling purr from Nyyx's shoulder. "I will accept that as a yes. Thank you Natalia, I understand this is difficult." * Nyyx nods stiffly. "Next, the kobold." What about him? "Why was it in the barn?" He is my apprentice. We rescued him from the Castle and have been training him to be productive to society. "Why?" Because he was a child and deserved a chance to grow up. "Pelor accepts all kinds that turn away from evil. I have no conflict with your judgment. You may well have redeemed it, Theodore." Redeemed him. He is a member of this community and a member of our party. * Oberon approaches the grave of Father Lucas and mutters under his breath. Marian: "What did you just do?" * Oberon looks embarrassed. Then gestures and suddenly looks much different. His paunch and eye color dissolving away. Commander: "Fair enough, Theodore. As I said, Pelor accepts all willing to turn from evil, even kobolds. He will still be interviewed about the castle." Very will. "I was hoping you wouldn't have to see that." Marian: "See what?" "Me trying to get out of work mostly, but also, through the disguise. I'd rather my admirers didn't find me." Commander: "Where did that spider-thing come from?" Marian: "Really, do tell." From the castle. We salavaged it yesterday. We didn't have time to take it apart yet, though. Commander: "I'll have the artificers check it out. Is there anything else I should see?" We dissected a few zombies. I have notes on the dissections. "Well, there really isn't much to tell. I just don't really enjoy the dirtier aspects of work-for-hire, and thought distracting you would help me get out of it. It seems this little town has better muscle behind it than I thought." Commander: "Excellent." Marian: "Dig the hole." "And, really, isn't finding out what they're talking about in there much more interesting?" Marian: "DIG THE HOLE." ... hole? * Charlotte finally speaks up. Gasp. * Oberon grimaces. "Look, you may not like me for what I did, but I assure you no harm would have come to you. Also, if I was willing to do that, do you really think I'm going to dig that hole just because you yell?" Marian: "Alright, we're done." [She walks off toward the front of the church.] * Oberon smiles and goes to find a couple of less important mercenaries to dig a hole for him. Commander: "That covers it for now. We will interview everyone separately over the next few days." * Nyyx nods again. "Natalia, your treatment will take place tonight. For now, I'll clean out that thing downstairs." Understood. [The Commander heads to the back of the church and the stairs.] [Marian and a subcommander return to Lucas's grave.] "Oberon, what is all of this about?" "Oberon?" [Marian and the subcommander look around confused.] [Marian and the subcommander exhume Father Lucas.] [Over the next several days, Oberon is fired from the mercenaries, the castle is cleared of all monsters and several large crates are removed from the castle.] [The castle itself is purged over the first two days. Interviews are conducted for the next four.] [The church is searched and Piotyr's tomb, the spider, the zombies, and Gabriel's body are all removed.] [The black stone is put under heavy guard.] [Marian is promised a replacement and ordered to clean out the church and use divine magic to destroy Kronnenburg Castle over the next five years.] [Marian and Olaf are extensively interviewed by the Clerics. Even more than the party.] [Eventually, the word leaks out that the castle was mostly deserted when the clerics raided it. They swept out the rest and cleaned out Gregor's remaining magical equipment. Including a red stone to go with the black.] [Search parties are sent out for Alexandre du Pre.] [On the first night that the Inquisition is in town, Nyyx is purged of the demon. The Commander submerges Nyyx's hand into consecrated holy water until all corrupted tissue burns away. Nyyx convolesces for the next few days and nurses her stump.] [On the Inquisition's last day in town, they "invite" the party and Liverwurst to come with them West.] [END OF SESSION] [END OF CHAPTER] Session Close: Sat Jun 09 23:26:54 2007
